Pyramid Stage 19:00
The Scene - as they are known in these parts - take the stage as the sun goes down, refusing to look like a festival band, Steve Craddock resplendent in a blue/grey collarless suit which hides a sporran (true!) and a nice line in knitted shirts. Shoes? White, of course. But boy can he play that gold Les Paul. A few power chords to get things started, or a monster riff as illustrated by the opening of new single 'July' and then he's coaxing sublime sounds out of his instrument. But the level of noodling is never less than tasteful and Steve never steals the limelight when Simon Fowler (surely the offspring of Ray Davies somewhere down the line) is on vocal duty. It's one of life's wonders that a man whose musical brain is so well honed that the likes of Paul Weller insists of having him on board, can put his foot in his mouth so appallingly on occasion. Get this. Simon Fowler spots festival goer: "There's a guy in the crowd over there with a 'Drop The Debt' banner. I can't think of a better slogan to introduce this next song." Then Steve butts in. "Never mind the f***ing debt," he bellows into the mic. "Drop your kecks!" The sound of jaws dropping open could be heard in Bristol. At least one festival goer, your reviewer, took this as his cue to look elsewhere for entertainment.
